AP Exams & Course Credit

Students who scored a 4 or 5 on the AP exam in Art History will received credit for ARH 100: Art and Human Experience. Please note that ARH 100 is not a required for any of the department’s majors, meaning all students majoring in Art Education, Art History, and Studio Art will still need to take ARH 155 and ARH 156.

The department does not automatically give course credit for high scores on AP exams in Studio Art but is happy to review AP portfolios that scored a 3, 4 or 5 to determine whether course credit is deserved. Students who earned a score of 3, 4 or 5 on an AP exam in Studio Art (Drawing, 2D Design, or 3D Design) must first submit their scores to the university (um.transfer@maine.edu). Subsequently, these students can submit their AP portfolio materials to the Department of Art. A faculty committee will review the materials and determine whether credit for a specific course will be granted.

Please submit the following to um.art@maine.edu: (1) a brief statement (no more than one page) describing the work and processes represented in the portfolio and (2) 10-12 jpegs of works in the AP portfolio. If the files are too large to send in a single email, please send multiple emails or a link to a Google Drive folder.
